Nivelle, George-Robert

Nivelle, George-Robert
(1858-1924)
   general
Born in Tulle, George-Robert Nivelle became an artillery officer and, in 1900, took part in the military expedition to China, before serving in North Africa. Placed in command of the Fourth Artillery Regiment (1911) at the beginning of World War I (1914), he fought in alsace and on the Ourcq River. Named commander of the Third Army Corps (1915), then of the Second Army (1916), he took part in a number of counteroffensives launched against the Germans at verdun (1916). Replacing General joseph joffre as the commander of the Armies of the North and the Northeast, he was relieved of his command and replaced by General Philippe pétain after the defeat during the offensive at Chemin des Dames; but the commission that was later charged with discovering the cause of this defeat could not find any tactical errors on the part of General Nivelle. He retired from the military after the war.
